Wednesday night, the University of Iowa Symphony Orchestra performed an all-Russian program at Hancher Auditorium. I am pretty picky about orchestras, and afterall it is a student ensemble – but I have to say it was a fantastic concert!
Each time I attend something at Hancher, I am reminded about the value of this venue right here in Iowa City. This is one of just a few places in Iowa that has an annual series featuring big name artists from every genre and around the world. Take a look at their current “Royal Season” (Queen Latifah, BB King, and much more).
This is Homecoming Weekend, and I plan on attending the big parade tonight and cheering for the Hawks on Saturday. If you plan on going, get their early to get a good spot, and bring a lawn chair. The parade starts at 5:45 (but the band tells me they don’t even have to report until 6:45 due to the fact that there will be about 150 units in this years parade.)
Also this weekend is the annual Oktoberfest at the Amana Colonies. If you are looking for an authentic German Oktoberfest in the Midwest, this is your place. They will be having activities all weekend, including a parade of their own, music, food, and carnival rides for the kids.
