Yesterday, we attended the Carnival at Lemme Elementary which is an annual Fall fundraiser held on the playground.Volunteers man ticket booths, carnival-style games, and concessions and hundreds of kids and family show up. It was a bit cool for a mid-September afternoon, and although it didn’t bother most people, the poor guys that volunteered for the dunk tank were freezing – I think the kids loved seeing their gym teacher and principal on the hot seat! It was fun watching all the activity, and I am sure it raised a lot of money for a great cause. Kudos to Aero Rental, who donated the Dunk Tank, the Disney Store for donating some really nice prizes for the fishing game (everyone was a winner),
The spirit and strength of our Iowa City Community School District are quite apparent at Lemme, home of the Leopards and a designated “Bully-Free Zone” – especially at events like this, movie night, and Fine Arts Night. It may have to do something with the positive influence of Helen Lemme, and the fact that Iowa has always kept education as a priority. If you have recently moved to Iowa City with kids, you are fortunate, for the public school system is outstanding in every way here.
