We just returned from a very pleasant hike on the trails around Coralville Reservoir, Woodpecker Nature Trail & Squire Point. It was a glorious day, the kind that make you love September. Staring up at the sunlit canopy of leaves above us, the carefully groomed trails, and the rolling hills, I would have believed you if you told me we were in Maine, Vermont, or Massachusetts – the last places we lived and hiked. Although we didn’t focus on the birds, apparently this is also a good place for birding.
My favorite part was at about halfway into the hike, we stopped to water the dogs and take a break at a park-style bench planted overlooking the reservoir. We caught our breath and enjoyed watching the jet-skis, speedboats towing “tubers” and the slower pontoon boats cruise by.
If you are new to the Iowa City/Coralville Area, or have lived here for a while and never taken advantage of that area, I urge you to check it out, especially now, as the weather is sunny and not blazing hot. In and around the area where we were, there is the Devonian Fossil Gorge, the Dam Complex, and several camping and RV areas.
