Irving B. Weber was Iowa City’s official town historian. The life and work of former All-American swimmer, Dairy president, and author’s life is celebrated during the month of May with a series of community events called Irving Weber Days. Yesterday, my daughter and I attended the Ice Cream Social at City Park. (Press Citizen Article)
In addition to free ice cream provided by Robert’s Dairy, we toured the historic cabin, tried out the stilts, heard the Iowa City Community Band, rode a carriage pulled by Clydesdales, got a horseshoe-throwing lesson, rode the train, and took advantage of the great weather on the playgrounds – and it was all free! (Well the rides were ten cents, but someone gave us some extra tickets, so even those were free) We are very fortunate in Iowa City to have such a park, even thought right now it’s a bit flooded. Besides horseshoe pits, playgrounds, and picnic shelters, there’s a fantastic pool, baseball diamonds, bocce pits, a “Globe-style” outdoor theater in the round, and permanent carnival rides. Across the Iowa River is the Dog park and Disc Golf course.
With the exception of the plethora of bugs due to all the rain, the weather was perfect. Even the mild flooding has created new mini-wetlands that are great for watching waterfowl, fish feeding on new-found grass, and catching pollywogs.
